Your ceremony doesn’t have to follow a traditional script. If you want to shake things up, add a little personality or do something completely unexpected — you absolutely can. Here are a few ideas to get you thinking outside the box…
'Out of the Ordinary' Ceremony Ideas.

Arrive Together.
Who says you have to arrive separately? Skip the traditional “bride arrives, groom waits” setup and arrive at your ceremony together. You can walk in side-by-side, share a private moment before joining your guests, or make your entrance together as a couple. A simple way to break tradition and start your ceremony together — just like you mean to spend the rest of your lives.
A Groom Entrance.
A groom entrance is a fun alternative to the traditional setup where the groom simply waits at the front. Instead, the groom gets his own moment to enter and be welcomed by the guests before the ceremony begins.
It can be as simple or as memorable as you like — walking in with the celebrant, entering with the wedding party, arriving with a parent or loved one, or even making a dramatic or funny entrance that reflects his personality. It’s a great way to make the ceremony feel more personal, relaxed and uniquely yours.
'Beer Boys' or 'Wine Women'.
Forget the flower girls — give the job to your mates! Your Beer Boys or Wine Women can make their way down the aisle to a fun song, handing out beers, bubbles or wine to your guests as they go. It’s a hilarious way to kick off the celebrations, get everyone involved and set the tone for a ceremony that’s anything but ordinary. Because who needs petals when you can have a drink?
Quiet Vows.
Want to keep your vows just between the two of you? Have the microphones switched off and share your vows quietly with each other while your guests write down a wish, piece of advice or message for your marriage. As each guest finishes writing, they ring a small bell — filling the space with little chimes of love and well wishes while you share your private moment. A beautiful way to keep your vows intimate while still making your guests feel part of the moment.
Take a moment.
Before you’re officially announced as married, take a moment to pause, turn around and look at all the people who came to celebrate with you. Take a breath, soak it in and see the faces of the people who have supported, loved and cheered you on. Then turn back around, take your partner’s hand and let the celebrations begin!
Hide the rings.
Want to make your ring exchange a little more exciting? Hide the wedding rings underneath two random guest seats before the ceremony begins. At the right moment, your celebrant can announce that two very lucky guests have just discovered they’re part of the ceremony! Those guests then bring the rings up to the couple, making for a fun, unexpected moment — and getting your guests involved in the action. A little surprise, a lot of excitement, and two very important ring bearers you didn’t have to choose yourself!
Witness Raffle.
Can’t decide who gets the honour of signing your marriage certificate? Let chance decide! Pop all your guests’ names into a hat (or something a little more creative) and draw two lucky names during the ceremony. Those guests become your official witnesses and get to come up and sign the marriage paperwork alongside you. It’s a fun little surprise that gets your guests involved — and takes the pressure out of choosing!
Honour those who are no longer with us.
A Petal for Those We’ve Lost.
A beautiful way to honour the people you love who can’t be here to celebrate with you. Place a confetti or petal stand at the ceremony and invite each guest to take a petal in memory of someone special who has passed away. As the petals are tossed, it becomes a beautiful collective tribute — a reminder that although they can’t be here, they’re still a part of your day and forever a part of your story.
A Seat for Those We’ve Lost.
Reserve a special seat in your ceremony for someone who can’t be there to celebrate with you. Place a vase and candle on the seat as a quiet tribute. As each bridesmaid walks down the aisle, they can add a flower to the vase, with the bride adding the final flower as she arrives. By the time the ceremony begins, the vase becomes a beautiful floral tribute — a special way to carry the memory of someone you love with you on your wedding day.
Watching From Above Tribute.
Create a special little space to honour the people you wish could be there to celebrate with you. Once everyone has arrived and taken their seats, have a few allocated people bring forward and place photos of their loved ones onto the tribute shelf. Surrounded by candles or flowers, the collection becomes a beautiful reminder of those who may not be there in person, but are still very much part of the day. A simple, heartfelt way to remember those watching from above.
